What does it cost?

A: All Special Olympics Maryland (SOMD) sports programs are free to all athletes. Our club get together for additional social activities that are not directly sponsored by SOMD and those activities may include a small cost which will be disclosed ahead of time.

Does my athlete need to be a resident of Kent County, MD?

A: No. You may live anywhere and still be eligible for any Special Olympic sport in any region that you choose.

What is the minimum age to participate?

A: An athlete must be eight years of age to compete in Special Olympics. If your athlete is younger, there may still be an opportunity to participate with our Club, so feel free to reach out.

What sports do you offer?

A: We currently offer swimming (March thru June) and kayaking (May thru August).

We also have a non-competitive bocce team (spring)

We are exploring additional sports (basketball and soccer) for the fall, but details are still being worked out.

When are practices and meetings?

A: Practices vary from season to season and are dependent on coaches’ schedules and facility availability. Practices and activities are often during weekday evenings but not always.

What if my athlete doesn’t want to compete? Can they still participate?

A: Yes!!

Does my athlete need to be a good player or know the rules?

A: No! Beginners are welcome!

What if I’m not sure we want to do this?

A: Talk to us. Come to a practice or two or three. You don’t need to commit right away. See if you like it.

Do you need volunteers?

A: Always! Reach out if you might be interested in volunteering.
